I11 - Exploring Education in Year 5 & Year 6

Perspectives on literacy, numeracy and much more!

Are you currently teaching Year 5 and/or Year 6 or perhaps moving into this class grouping for the next school year? Are you looking to sharpen up your approaches, searching for new ideas, hunting for creative resources, on the look out for additional techniques, then you have come to the right place! We have gone the extra mile to craft an all encompassing, well resourced course for the teacher of Year 5 and/or Year 6.

In this self-paced curriculum focused & classroom practical course, filled with creative ideas & top tips and packaged with superb resources to take away, we begin by looking at the defining principles and features of the primary school curriculum. We explore the nature of learning and look at assessment as a central starting point to teaching and learning and look at short and long term planning as fundamental to proper curriculum delivery. We will work through various text types in English in order to better understand their defining features as they relate to childrens’ reading and writing.
We will examine some of the best approaches to concept building in mathematics supplemented by quality teaching resource materials, followed by an exploration of ‘The Writing Process’, encompassing it’s application in the classroom and potential to drive better writing outcomes. Included here will be a large section on the reading, appreciation and writing of poetry.
The course concludes with a look at a ‘Thematic’ approach to S.E.S.E.. along with lots of creative approaches & ideas for the visual arts and activities for all areas of the P.E. programme in Year 5 & Year 6.
The on-line format of the course enables you to study when and where you want to learn. Content is divided into 5 modules which you can complete in any order at any time.
Participants are encouraged to interact with one another using the communication tools (forum, chat, e-mail) provided by the CPD College learning system. Active facilitation throughout the course provides expert interaction, guidance and feedback for all participants. Assignments and questions which call for critical reflection, self-analysis and a reasoned response punctuate this highly interactive web based course.
On completion of this course each participant can download their CPD record and Certificate of completion. The Certificate of completion demonstrates your achievement in completing this professional development course.

Learning outcomes

Course participants will know, appreciate and apply the defining curriculum principles that should underpin their teaching. Teachers will acquire ideas and approaches for the progression of competence in reading and writing within the various text types in English. Participating teachers will also meet some new ideas, approaches, understandings & resources that will inform & underpin their teaching of Mathematics. A thematic approach to units of work in S.E.S.E. should be more prominent as a result of participation on this course. Finally, teachers will have a greater wealth of ideas for lessons in the Visual arts and P.E.
